Berlin is abuzz around the clock. The fall of the Wall triggered the city-state’s metamorphosis into a European metropolis with global appeal.
Since 3 October 1990, Berlin has been reunited and serves once more as capital of the Federal Republic of Germany and the seat of Parliament and Government. It is also a centre for industry, services, trade fairs and congresses. People from all over Germany and from over 190 different countries live in Berlin giving the city a great deal of multicultural flair.
Today, Berlin is the third most visited city in Europe. Teaching and research centres as well as a vibrant cultural scene complete the picture. The five museums on the Museum Island make for one of the world’s largest exhibition ensembles. The Berliner Ensemble, the Staatsoper and the Philharmonie are also at home here. Berlin is also famed for its international film festival, the Berlinale, and its hip night-life. Turning to the economy, the city sees its future in the spheres of the creative economy, health/biotechnology, energy technology and transport systems technology.
