Seventy-five years ago, representatives of 50 countries from all over the world signed the Charter of the United Nations after two months of talks.

The United Nations is marking this special anniversary with the motto „the future we want, the United Nations we need: reaffirming our collective commitment to multilateralism“. Guided by the conviction that joint solutions are better, more sustainable and more just than when nations go it alone, our goal is to strengthen the UN values laid down in its Charter 75 years ago. Germany remains a firm supporter of this multilateralism, with the United Nations at its heart, at difficult times, too.

As one of the UN’s current 193 member states, Germany is committed to its special engagement in the UN as the fourth-largest contributor, a provider of troops to UN peace missions, a location for UN organisations and, since the beginning of 2019, an elected member of the UN Security Council for the sixth time. Working with like‑minded partners in the Security Council and the Alliance for Multilateralism, we bring in new ideas, thus proving that we are in fact able to find multilateral solutions. This enables us to underpin our great appreciation for the UN, especially on the 75th anniversary of the signing of its Charter.

We are pleased that you have discovered our virtual Atrium. We would like to welcome you to our exhibition, in which we look back at the history of the UN, explain how it works, show what instruments are available to it and describe the role Germany plays in it. However, we want to focus on the future of the UN and invite you to share your thoughts on this with us. We look forward to your suggestions as to how we can stride forth together with our work to strengthen the UN and to anchor rules-based multilateralism.
